An indelible mark was left upon America after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and left the U.S. With an overshadowing sense of vulnerability. The U.S. was determined to respond to this new security threat and made Congress enact laws that provided new tools to fight terrorism. The most controversial act of Congress is the United and Strengthening of America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001, otherwise known as the US Patriot Act, and its impact upon the use of electronic surveillance and physical searches authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (FISA) to combat foreign threats.
A majority of Americans worry that the actions taken by Congress will infringe upon their basic American liberties. To quote Benjamin Franklin: ‘Those who would give up essential liberties to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety’. Naturally, the government needs to use new tools in order to preserve the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, but, at the same time, the government needs to make sure that the fight against terrorism is vigorous and effective. An American should not be forced to seek safety over liberty.
The FISAs responsibilities since its inception in 1968, is to gather foreign intelligence information. The purpose of a Title III wiretap order is to gather evidence for criminal prosecution. An application by the FISA only needs to state facts to support probable cause that the target of the search is a foreign power or agent of a foreign power and that the facilities to be monitored or searched are being used by said target. In contrast, a criminal Title III wiretap must be supported by probable cause that a specific individual, using an identified phone or location, is committing a particular crime. So, both FISA and Title III require a showing of probable cause to authorize electronic monitoring.
The USA PATRIOT Act is the most significant change involving the purposes for which FISA-authorized electronic monitoring and searches may be used and the exchange of information between criminal and foreign intelligence investigators. In short, the USA PATRIOT Act overrides the FISA and Title III, which makes probable cause a non issue. On top of that a judge can not deny the application of surveillance by Federal officers. The courts have recognized that the USA PATRIOT Act is lawful and covers a breach in the wall between criminal law enforcement and intelligence or counter-intelligence gathering. The US PATRIOT Act amendments of the FISA statute do not violate the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution.
Perth is one of the most unique cities in Australia, with a rugged individualism coupled with a charming cosmopolitan sensibility, and visits here are delightful, even on the worst days. It has a fantastic cultural scene, with some of the finest festivals in Australia. It also has a long history of human inhabitation, where Aboriginal relics from over 40,000 years ago have been found. There are lots of museums with native artifacts on display, and it’s part of the cultural fabric here. There are Aborigne-owned and operated businesses, including tours and galleries, and this is a fantastic way to learn about the city. It is a really fascinating blend of the old and the new, where cultures and technologies are continually writing themselves on the cityscape. Our luxury Perth hotels are a splendid place to center your stay here.
Our hotels are a gorgeous feast for the senses, offering an experience in accommodation that will refresh the weariest of souls. Our Australian hospitality is very down-to-earth, and very warm, and you’ll be smiling before you’ve even seen your room. And after a lovely rest and a lovely meal, you’ll be ready to explore what Perth has to offer. You’ll see that the presence of the Nyoongar people is strong here, because the native population in Perth is higher than in other cities, and because there is interest in the art, tradition, and culture in Western Australia. It’s hard to avoid Kings Park and Botanic Garden in Perth, and it’s also an excellent idea to visit here, because there is much to see for every member of the family.
This was once bushland, and belonged to the Nyoongar people. The government has preserved this relatively small area, about the size of Central Park in New York, so that the citizens of Perth would be able to enjoy the nature here. It starts at Mt. Eliza and extends to the Swan River, and has been awarded the status of Heritage Icon. There are many historical things of note here, looking back to the events of the mid-nineteenth century that surrounded the creation of the park, and then there is the botanic gardens to see what was here even before a human presence. Of particular interest are the performances of the Warrdong Cultural Performers Group, who enact tribal dances and rituals, in a very complicated place with splendid vistas, and history still moving beneath the feet.
We took the train from Edinburgh, Scotland to Newcastle, it was some what difficult to figure out what we were doing, but we managed to figure things out. When we arrived in Newcastle, we really had a time of it just trying to exit the train station. The tickets we purchased told us that there would be a train change, so we thought we were supposed to change trains. Apparently, there are two train stations, the Metro and the Metro Citycenter. The station we arrived at was the correct one, but we were never told that. We finally asked the person sitting behind the information desk and she sent us to the other side of the platform, then a woman told us that we were not at the right place, we ended up going to the other end. Then, when we got there, we were told to get on a different train and go to the next stop. When we made it to that train, that’s when we found out we were where we needed to be all along!
We walked uphill for about a mile to our Newcastle hotel where we dropped our bags off and walked back down to the station again to hop on a train to Hexham, then got on a bus to Hadrian’s wall. When we got back to our hotel, we were exhausted. We were so ready for bed, but we just had to walk around Newcastle City Center for a little bit. We went into a shop that makes handmade cosmetics and purchased a few items there. Then when we could no longer walk, we headed back to our hotel room and crashed. The next morning, we hiked down the hill and made it to the station just in time.
We had fun in Newcastle, it is quite different than Scotland and it has the qualities of any big city, which offers good shopping experiences. It’s gorgeous here in Newcastle and a little bit hectic, but it’s worth a stay.
My friend was just tell me about portable hot tubs. He was telling me that there are manufacturers making hot tubs that are completely portable. You can move them from one place to another. If you rent property or move around a lot this is a great solution to having a permanent tub installed and having to leave it behind and try and set up a new one where you move? or if you rent, well it makes no sense at all to run the plumbing and install the electrical wiring that is required to run a standard permanent hot tub only to leave it all behind to benefit your landlord? I don’t think so!
But now with this information in mind I am convenience that getting a portable hot tub is the way to go. With no need to run plumbing there needs only to be the tough of how to get water into the tub. Well I have enough hose to reach any where on my property so that is not going to be a problem. The portable hot tub will run on a standard electrical out let so that actually becomes the only real consideration to be made and fortunately on the back porch there are several electrical out lets. looking into the pricing with portable hot tubs starting at less than one thousand dollars one would be affordable.
Considering all the factors involved, compact size, no need for special electrical, no need to run special plumbing and portable for when I move next. There really is no reason not to get one at this point and begin reaping the benefits of hydrotherapy.
The United States, as a member or the World Bank/OECD Global Corporate Governance Forum, is working with all the international financial institutions and a majority of the private sector to insure that these institutions promote excellent corporate practices.
The World Bank and any regional development banks, are encouraged by the US and other international donors to incorporate anti-corruption policies as a major focus to their activities and all their lending practices.
As an active participant in the Council of Europe’s (CoE) Group of States Against Corruption (GRECO) that watches the efforts of all 34 members to implement all their commitments to anti corruption principles, The United States, has made on site visits to evaluate anti corruption efforts, over the past three years, put forth by all the GRECO’s members, checking for compliance with the CoE’s 20 guiding principles, the Criminal Law Convention on Corruption and providing valuable constructive advice on how these efforts can be improved upon.
The United States will continue and step up its efforts to be a leader that promotes a societal role who fights against corruption. Primarily, this work will take the form of technical assistance and provide funding for any anti-corruption organization throughout the world. The US is promoting in several countries, formal partnerships between civil societies and government that relate to the fight against corruption.
Fighting corruption is the United States a priority in foreign policies. According to the World Bank, corruption is the greatest obstacle to the promotion of social and economical development. They have estimated that over a trillion dollars every year is spent by national economies for bribery alone. But, what is key to fighting corruption will involve a broad cross section of the criminal justice sector and law enforcement. This encompasses counter-narcotics, counter-terrorism, money laundering, smuggling of goods, illegal migration, financial crime, trafficking in persons, terrorist financing, border controls, cyber-crime and intellectual property rights protection. Accountability at all levels of government and throughout the private sectors will now be scrutinized more than ever before.
One of the most addictive drugs our country has to deals with today is methamphetamine (meth). Not only does it present risks to the user and those close to them, but also the community. As a result of the highly unstable properties of the chemicals used to make meth (paint thinner, lithium batteries, chlorine, and bleach just to name a few), especially once they are combined and heated, many people each year are injured or killed and property damaged by fires and explosions of methamphetamine drug houses. However, research shows that the number of drug houses has decreased with the increase in education about the dangers of meth use and as well as the increased regulations on the purchase the chemicals required to make it. Unfortunately, foreign drug markets have filled in where the local markets left off. The amounts of meth coming in from Mexico and even Canada have made of up for the lack of American supply.
The risk, however, is not only restricted to fires from cooking this highly addictive drug. There are just as many, if not more dangers to those who use. Once the user has injected, snorted, smoked, or ingested the meth they receive a “rush” that is increasing the amount of dopamine their brain receives. The result is extreme wakefulness, physical activity, and a decrease in appetite. It can also cause an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, and hyperthermia. After prolonged use, symptoms of paranoia and hallucinations begin to appear. Even after the user has stopped, there are health problems that will remain for the rest of their lives. These include loss of memory, impaired verbal learning, and change in emotional function.
The only treatment currently available is attendance at an addiction treatment center. There are no medications currently approved to help with methamphetamine addiction treatment. The journey to recovery is long, with high chance of relapse, but through rehab, and sometimes dual diagnosis treatment, users have gone on to live happy, successful lives.
Property investment and management is becoming an increasingly complicated arena to manage to. With the ever changing laws and regulations, the market ups and the market downs, and then on top of it all trying to expand operations and investments across international borders just adds additional complications to the game. As our company expands and our desire to diversify into broader real estate markets. One hedge against these volatile markets, we think, is to expand internationally. Naturally Canada seems like the best prospect for us to get our feet wet with the possibility of going international.
Researching the net we came across the company Transglobe Property Management apparently a company with a large inventory of managed properties in Canada. This company manages over 20 thousand residential housing units and they manage some 5 million square feet of commercial and industrial real estate properties. Transglobe Property Management checked out with an excellent rating through our research with the Canadian Better Business Bureau. All in all everything looked good. We will need to make some final decisions, like how soon, and how much, before actually setting up meetings and contacting a company for information and assistance in locating the appropriate properties for our expansion.
Taking trips across the border north we have always enjoyed ourselves and the prospect of expanding operations there is very palatable as it would give myself and the family more opportunity to travel to and around Canada. Next time we go I hope to add some business with the fun and gain some in site and get information on the areas of growth and areas of perspective growth. An exciting prospect and fun to think about, something breaking the routine of an ordinary day and another reason to plan a trip to Canada.
It’s always a splendid time to visit South Australia. The food, the beaches, the fascinating cultural mix, make it one of the more gorgeous places on earth. Adelaide is a fantastic town. With over one million inhabitants, there is a lively street life to go along with the proximity to the water. It’s a substantial city, but not too unmanageable, so that there is the eclectic urban mix that doesn’t overwhelm the experience. It’s also considered by the Economist to be one of the most livable cities. It’s pretty hard to beat when it comes to the heady blend of culture and nature, and there’s a lot to recommend Adelaide. Boutique hotels here are also truly splendid, with the benefits of the city close by, and all the charm you can imagine. Hospitality and tradition go hand in hand here.
Adelaide has a fair share of celebrities among its citizens. There are a large number of film industry people, actors, directors, as well as writers and artists, who both come from and are now living in Adelaide. In the music industry, there are a solid number of bands from here, and all the major concerts come through here. The city also had a particularly peculiar rock star who lived here for awhile. Bon Scott, the lead singer for AC/DC, was working at loading in Adelaide when he ran into the Young brothers, Angus and Malcolm. He had recently recovered from a head-on motorcycle accident, due to drinking, and also just filed for divorce when he was offered the gig.
Bon Scott was originally from Scotland, and actually his nickname comes from there. Friends here made fun of him for having come from the Bonny Isle, and the moniker stuck. He had originally been studying the drums when AC/DC was talking to him, and they kept insisting they needed him to be their lead singer. It’s a good thing for rock n’ roll that he agreed. His wild behavior on stage, along with his gut-busting vocals makes him one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music. He enjoyed a spectacular but short run with the band, when his love of excess caught up to him and he died from drinking in 1980. For a legacy, he leaves some of the most memorable songs ever recorded.
When it comes to kids and drugs the best prevention is early intervention. While it is important keep things on a level that they can understand, it is never too early to start talking to your kids about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The earlier you start talking to them about the risks involved in using drugs, the less likely they will be to try it. Maintaining an open line of communication is an essential part of keeping your kids off drugs.
Kids try drugs for various reasons: fitting in, peer- pressure, curiosity, boredom, stress. Early adolescence is a very tumultuous time for kids. Being aware of what is going on in their lives, what they’re thinking, what they’re feeling could make the difference in whether or not they even consider trying drugs. Understanding and then explaining to your child the long term effects of addiction is key in the battle against substance abuse. Not only do drugs do damage to your body, like kill brain cells and damage your lungs and kidneys, drugs also impair your ability to make good choices which can put you into even more dangerous situations. And once addicted the addiction treatment process is long and slow, often requiring attendance at an addiction treatment center.
There are many resources and programs that are now available to help parents and kids maintain a drug and alcohol free life. The D.A.R.E program is one such program that goes into elementary schools and helps to educate kids in a fun way about the risks of drug and alcohol use. However, education must begin in the home. Parents are still the number one anti-drug. Let’s stop this cycle of abuse before one more child gets sucked into the world of drugs and one more parent has to stage an alcohol drug intervention to save them.
For those individuals with certain health issues, there are many health benefits to owning and using a hot tub. Aside from the sheer pleasure derived from a nice soaking in a hot tub, the heat of the water aids immensely in relaxing those stiff, aching muscles and joints. This is especially beneficial to arthritis sufferers as the hot water helps with muscle range of motion and flexibility. The stresses, anxieties and worries of everyday life can be eased with time spent in the hot water. With the relaxation of the body and mind, blood pressure is also reduced as circulation improves. And if the hot tub has the jets, the pulsating action of the mixture of air and water adds to the benefits. The hot water surrounding the majority of the body causes the body temperature to rise, thus releasing endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers. Usually the hot tub has been placed in a location conducive to further relaxation, such as the outside surrounded by trees, bushes, flowers, perhaps a scenic view of mountains or a lake.
There are some hot tubs that are considered to be workout tubs or spas or swim spas. This allows the user to actually swim, thus strengthening muscles and relieving joint pain. The jets of these swim spas can be angled towards specific target areas of the body as the person swims, thus obtaining maximum benefits during this workout.
The size, shape, model and price are all things to be considered when deciding to purchase a hot tub. Another big consideration is what you want the benefits to be. There is a hot tub for whatever you have determined your need to be. The available options and accessories will also influence your decision. Choosehottubsdirect.com is a great site to refer to when you are researching. Make your choice and enjoy your hot tub for years.
There are many long term benefits of attending drug rehab, both for the individual and the community. Drug addiction reeks havoc on an untold number of families each year. Drugs separate children from their parents, spouses, friends and neighbors. By reaching out for help, families can begin to put the pieces back together and join together in support of the one needing help. Many individuals also face losing their jobs over drug addiction because they are often late, absent, or unable to focus. Once on the street they face the risk of violent injury or disease from poor hygiene and often sharing needles. Drug rehab can help them regain the confidence to get their family life and work life back on track.
On a community level, drug rehab helps to lower the crime rate. The addictive qualities of drugs bring people down so far that they are willing to do most anything for the next high. Many of the burglaries that are committed from homes and cars are committed by addicts looking for products to sell so they can buy more drugs. Other more violent crimes, such as assault and murder, are also committed over drugs. These actions put the lives of civilians and police officers at risk.
It is not an easy for an individual to admit that they need addiction treatment, so often the friends or family must join together and stage an alcohol drug intervention. Interventions are not easy on the family or the addict but it needs to be done—the sooner the better. Depending on the circumstances, insurance companies will even help cover the expenses for an individual to receive treatment. Once they are through rehab the individual will once again be free to thrive, then the family will thrive, and the community will thrive.
Conversely to what we expect of the Hawaiian Islands today, Hawaii was once ruled with a caste system akin to system India employs today. The lowliest of the caste were the kauwa. This caste was primarily made up of slaves and pariahs. Though a jokey term used in passing, kahuna used to have a larger connotations for the Hawaiian society. Kahunas were priests and the people proficient in religious and spiritual matters, which included medicine and canoes. They were the highest caste. In between these two is the maka’aina caste, who were, to put it colloquially “the little people,” the blue collar workers who built and farmed and were responsible for other foundational activities of the community.
The laws that ruled them were the kanawi. If something was sacred, it meant other people were forbidden from it, or to employ the Hawaiian terminology, kapu. The laws cover everything from eating arrangements to dietary restrictions. For instance, women were not allowed to eat a variety of things, including coconuts and pork. “Being green” was another natural part of their society. Strictly controlled were fishing and farming. Death was usually applied to those who broke any of the rules. Because many of these rules about environmental regulation were important to keeping the society secure, any rule breaking could have a disastrous result.
Hawaiians had a deep connection with this way of life, but then James Hook, the first outsider to make contact and bring Hawaii into the world’s knowledge, came on the scene, he landed on the Kealakekua Bay of the Kona coast. Some people who have studied the history of this time think the tribal peoples thought that Cook was actually a representative of Lono. He was the Hawaiian’s fertility god. The reason for this probably stems from the fact that it was Makahiki. This was a time during the year in which the Hawaiians stopped any warring or frivolity to pay tribute to the god. As a result, Cook received quite a welcoming from the natives.
When he tried to leave the island, a storm stopped him, forcing to land back where he first moored. Because they took him to be on par with their god, Lono, the Hawaiians did not get why a little thing like a storm could hurt him. Tensions arouse from the situation, tensions that became a mainstay in the troubles that would plague Hawaii for many years. In response to this misunderstanding, the islanders murdered Cook eventually.
Across the world there are many elements of historic landmarks and areas that in part remain mysteries and attract the world’s imagination. This is certainly true for Stone Henge in England, Pachu Pechu in Peru and even the pyramids of Egypt. Right here in the United State, the humble southern state of Florida has the Coral Castle, which has puzzled scientists and the public alike since it was built. Guests staying in one of the West Florida hotels often make the trip to visit this unique and puzzling attraction.
The stone structure known as Coral Castle comprised the living and work complex of Edward Leedskalnin, the Latvian American lovelorn eccentric who created one of the marvels of the contemporary world. The amazing landmark is located at near the intersection of the South Dixie Highway and Southwest 157th Ave. It is north of Homestead. The amazing complex began after Leedskalnin was abandoned and rejected by the love of his life, his fiancée, one day before their intended wedding. The fantastic stories surrounding him begin before he left to come to America. He is reported to have come down with a terminal cause of Tuberculosis, which was extremely common at the time, and was somehow miraculously healed. Leedskalnin himself reported that magnets were involved with his illness and recovery.
The complex is composed primarily of megalithic stones, mostly made from limestone formed from coral. These stones all weigh several tons and a major part of the mystery is how Leedskalnin could have manipulated and moved these huge objects. The carvings and sculptural design of the stone garden is also extremely impressive as well as is some of the functioning and exact placement and dynamics of these enormous weights. No one has ever been able to figure out exactly how he created the castle, which he worked on until the point of his death in 1951, though many people have put out various theories on electromagnetic currents.
Singapore has a growing population of tourists, which is representative of the progressive and continual developments in the cultural scene. There are many attractions that entice visitors every year, and the recently developed Singapore Marina has become an extremely popular attraction. The Esplanade area along the water front offers beautiful promenades, such as the Queen Elizabeth Walk, great shopping and restaurants, as well as excellent theatre and other performance genres. The Esplanade Theatres on the Bay is an amazing complex of performances spaces that has quickly become one of the city’s most prestigious and popular entertainment and theatre centers.
The theatrical complex is located near the mouth of the Singapore River along the Marina Bay and offers views that are as exciting and enchanting as the many productions and various other performances it houses. Its two main venues include a 1,600 seat Concert Hall and a theatre that seats 2000. In addition, there are various functional venues, outdoor performance areas, dining establishments and even a library. There is also an amazing outdoor area on the fourth floor, which offers some of the most incredible views possible, and does this among a quiet and relaxing garden atmosphere.
The Concert Hall accommodates various recitals, symphonies, virtuoso solo performances among many others. It has an incredible state of the art sound and acoustics system that is matched by only a select few other performance centers throughout the world. The Theatre in the Esplanade is an incredible performance venue that was designed as a variation on the standard European horseshoe opera house structure. It is equipped to house all kinds of theatrical performances, from major musicals to intimate dramas. The stage is an adjustable proscenium arch and there is an orchestral pit that will accommodate up to one hundred musicians. These two venues alone have housed some of the greatest performances on the Singapore entertainment scene.
New Orleans holds a special place in myth, in cultural memory, and in the popular imagination. One of the most legendary places in the world, it would have a hard time living up to the stories, if it were not actually New Orleans. Fortunately, it is, and it continues to evolve as the diverse, exciting, and enormously interesting city is has always been. This is a place where cultures converge, and sometimes it’s messy, and sometimes it’s an elegant dance, but it’s absolutely vital, and to visit here is to witness the magic on the dance floor and even become part of it for awhile. For such a spectacular city, there would have to be an excellent selection for luxury hotels. New Orleans is not given to disappointing its guests, and yes, the hotels are spectacular. We’ve carefully selected these hotels to offer the best in comfort, design, and service. Each one is unique and there is something here to suit every taste.
In New Orleans, there is something happening at every hour of the day, and at every time of year. There are wonderful attractions here to please visitors of all ages, with tours and riverboats and fairs, and even an afternoon of people watching from the Cafe du Monde can seem like the best day ever. It attracts interesting minds from all over the world, and one of these minds just might belong to Andrei Codrescu. He retired in 2009 from his post as Distinguished Professor at Louisiana State University, and has contributed to the social fabric here for 25 years.
It doesn’t seem that long, because he can’t be that old. His public performances of his poetry are animated and show a profoundly elegant grasp of the form. It makes sense because he’s been editor of the Exquisite Corpse, one of the most savvy poetry journals in publication. He’s also been one of the most recognizable voices on NPR, delivering short blasts of prose that speak eloquently of politics, culture, and high-top tennis shoes. Emigrating to the U.S. from Romania in 1966, he is one of the key figures in the poetry scene today, and has written volumes of essays that are both sublime and biting. He can write on anything, but the work on New Orleans is particularly striking. He’s just the perfect misfit to speak for this incomprehensible, lovely place.
On a recent long weekend excursion to Miami, I fell in love with two places. One was Espanola Way and the other was Lincoln Road Mall. I wanted somewhere to go shopping that was within walking distance from one of the hotels Miami Florida where I had booked a room for the three-day weekend. For me, shopping is a vacation. So when I stumbled across two fabulous places to shop, I was in heaven.
I instantly felt like I was transported back in time when I entered Espanola Way. It’s an historic Spanish village. The Art Deco alone is worth the visit, it’s so vibrant and beautiful. It’s located in the South Beach area between 14th and 15th street and Jefferson and Washington streets. The secluded streets are lined with restaurants, art galleries and shops. There’s, apparently, a weekend Festival, which features live music and an open air market that sell handmade crafts. What I really appreciated about this marvellous village was just how convenient it was to shop there.
Now, where Espanola Way is marvellous, Lincoln Road is an extravaganza. It’s 7 blocks made for pedestrian traffic. It runs from Biscayne Bay to Collins Road and has over 400 shops, businesses and restaurants! It felt very international, but with out all the tourists. I was walking to a restaurant for dinner when I noticed that the English language was the minority language. All the cafes had outdoor seating, actually, there were more seats outside than inside most of the restaurants. I went to Le Bon eatery and had the mussels, very delicious and I topped it off with a beer from Belgium and tiramisu. Besides the shops, they also have a farmers market, which offers a wide array of fruits, vegetables, home made breads, flowers and juices. I noticed that this market was popular among the locals of South Beach, but I’m here for the shopping, so anything where I can shop is popular to me. And I have 3 day to do it in!
I love having pet birds, I have a Rosella and two ring necks. The Rosella is a very colorful bird and the ring necks are simply sweet hearts. Yes they require work like feeding, watering and cleaning up after but the happiness they bring. The playful chatter in the mornings and there focus on eating some seed and nuts is simple and beautiful. After a while I go in to the kitchen and cut up some pieces of fruit from them. Every morning they greet the fruit with the same excitement and enthusiasm. Each has their favorite and what they won’t touch. I offer a piece of bananas to my Rosella and she gives me a look like I don’t want that! Of course this offer comes after she had jealously displayed her desire for some banana after one of the ring necks went nuts for it. Funny to see and just about every morning it happens. I do much of my work from home and really enjoy their company. Some days they are the only other interactions I have with something living. The danger from working from home is to be working all the time. The birds are a great distraction from the work. They let me know when they need attention and let out telling calls. These calls are my reminders it is time for a break and to play with a bird for a little while. Today I was booking my flight and accommodations at a five star hotel Delhi when suddenly there landed a Rosella on my key board. Ignored for too long, she made her way off her cage to a book shelf and then onto some plants and onto my desk. I had been hours on this project and she broke the spell reminding me what is really important around here, her and her feathered friends.
Singapore’s Chinatown. As you walk the streets in Chinatown your senses will all be awakened by the vibrant, gorgeous colors and designs in the buildings, the décor, the clothing, the signs. The aromas that fill the air will linger around you as you search for the eateries creating those enticing scents. Perhaps it’s a little sit down diner or simply a little stand selling noodles and fresh vegetables in a meat sauce. The sounds are everywhere, cars, trucks and buses, people bantering, in Cantonese and other dialects, with each other and with strangers across the way. The streets are filled with little stalls and shopkeepers encouraging tourists and locals alike to purchase their wares. You stop and feel the soft, elegant silk fabrics, the hard metal trinkets, the carved wooden art pieces; you admire the talented artists as you gaze upon their paintings and sculptures. There is also an area of Chinatown where you will find unique shops that carry rare and expensive antiques.
The fascination for these traditional Chinese quarters is not new. Tourists from the world over are drawn to this area now, as they have been for centuries before. Watching and listening is truly an adventure in itself. You will definitely want to visit the Chinatown Heritage Square, the Jamae Mosque and the Sri Mariamman Temple. Another interesting stop would be the Toy Factory Theatre Ensemble. This active theatre group consistently tests the boundaries of free expression. There are many more historic sites, interesting tours, museums and festivals. So much to see and do, so much to take in. After a day of exhilarating sightseeing, be sure and relax at a Singapore spa hotel where you will be greeted by the friendly, polite staff ready to make your stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible. The amenities are numerous and luxurious. Singapore Chinatown, not to be forgotten.
Next Day Blinds offers options for the window treatments of painters’ studios across the country. One of the most important, if not the most important of options, is the access and control of the natural light that they will use to paint, or sculpt. The perfect studio is one in which the paint can drip on the floor, the music plays non-stop, and the light is just right.
The adjustment of natural light provided by the blinds on the windows or sky lights of a painters studio is essential as in this adjustment allows for the comparison of color, color that is seen in natural light, by which all other color is judged. If a painting looks right in the perfect situation of North light, it is right. A large space is essential, in order to be able to maneuver the easel around the room to find the best possible lighting conditions.
The lighting one paints under has dramatic effects on the paintings themselves. Works created under incandescent light will appear too blue, while those painted under fluorescent lighting will appear less rich, with the oranges and the reds appearing too dull. There are color-corrected bulbs, which serve their purpose should one have the inclination to paint in the middle of the night. However nothing beats true North light of the daytime hours and the ability to censor that light through the product found at Next Day Blinds.
When all is said and done, it is most optimum to work in light that is brighter than that in which the painting will ultimately be shown. Colors will be subtle when necessary, but pop at the intended and most desirable areas of the works. It one should choose to enhance the natural light with artificial lamps, that is fine, but natural light is necessary when creating works of realism, or works wherein the color is the main focus.

What does it mean to practice due diligence? This is an important topic in modern times, an important concept to follow in terms of the world of politics, the world of big business and foreign transactions, the financial sector in all aspects, as well as being important in the world of those that are combating and investigating cases of international and regional corruption. But still, what does it all mean. I was not wise to this concept until I started looking up all these subjects on Google.
And the more I read about it all, the more I could see the evidence of the times in my life wherein I myself failed to practice due diligence, I realized the importance of the concept and I have the negative as well as the positive consequences when one is compliant, or not compliant with performing the procedures. Quite simply due diligence means to know what you are getting into, what you are purchasing, from whom you are purchasing, and with whom you are becoming involved. For all those aspects of any kind of transaction, have far reaching implications and effects on the entirety of one’s life. Think of it in this way, in the regular everyday life, due diligence is just research.
Say one would like to purchase a mountain bike. Due diligence would be the search for perhaps the best deal or bargain, or the search for the most hi-tech, high performance bicycle. They ask friends, they make inquiries into reputable distributors and bike shops. They may want to ensure that they are riding the safest bike possible depending on their level of skill. For if they get taken by a salesman that is not trustworthy, they may be taken advantage of financially, or they may harm themselves on a bicycle they thought was capable of more dangerous of a ride. This is one aspect.
Another aspect is that of guilt by association. Over the years many corporations, be they soda pop companies or the makers of sports equipment and shoes have been found guilty of breaking child labor laws in foreign countries. By setting up shop in countries where the laws are either not enforced or non-existent, they make more of a profit. I will never forget personally, when someone commented on a brand of tennis shoes I was wearing, saying that the company was corrupt and didn’t I know what they were doing? I didn’t, but that didn’t make me any less guilty, for I hadn’t researched in depth enough and that was no excuse. So, in layman’s terms, that is what due diligence means, and those are the consequences of not practicing it always.
We flew direct from New York City, a longer flight I could not imagine, although I slept much of it, while Lissa read her Kindle. She had downloaded info to show me about an India 5 star hotel that had parrots in the lobby flying around, which she thought exotic, but I thought big deal, wait til we get there. New Delhi had certainly transformed since the fifteen years I had last been there as a buyer for a silk importer based in St. Louis. Back then the streets were crowded, chaotic and loud. I hear now however you can get a good cup of coffee, and possibly a panini. I don’t know if that’s a good thing, but it’s nice to know. We decided we would either do yoga or see an astrologer just for fun. Well, the astrologer said yoga was in the future (that’s what I told Lissa) as I desperately needed a return to a physical practice, even on vacation. so here we were doing down dogs and warrior poses with a room full of Indians, and everyone there was so much more flexible, I mean twist themselves into pretzel flexible, it was fascinating to watch, inspiring yet a little depressing in a way. One is not supposed to compare oneself with others in yoga, yet I realized I will probably never get anywhere near their level. Mr. Sanghi, who led the class, constantly looked over to we if we were OK,and offered encouragement as we sweated and shook as the others in class performed easily. After class, we gathered our mats and had tea together and we chatted with the class mates, asking about the area, where to eat, where to go. We hoped to get in another class before we leave as we both felt much better having practiced, releasing the bodily tension of so much travel.

One of the most important things that individuals can do for themselves during this time of global recession, is to take responsibility. That is hard to do sometimes when being laid seems out of one’s control, or when dealing with the thought of one’s own home foreclosure. Denton, Texas residents as well as those living in cities such as Manhattan or Los Angeles, are feeling it, and some, perhaps many people are feeling in the way that if they do have a paycheck coming in, that they are living the stressful life of “paycheck to paycheck“.
During times such as this, it be hard to switch jobs and most definitely to get laid off as one has no safety net. Many active steps can be taken to reduce monthly spending, such as living without cable television or moving into less expensive living quarters. What becomes emotionally taxing is the fact that many people are working harder than ever before, and are still not making enough money for the essentials. If a car breaks down or a dog needs to go to the veterinary clinic, this throws one right into the area of disaster.
People need to change their mindset during times like these, which will not only serve to reduce stress and the dangerous health risks of that whole cycle, but they need to realize that they do have the power to change their situation if they go at it one hundred percent. Many things do affect one’s life, past experiences, lack of proper education, or the random disasters of the previously stated car breaking down. However by moving on and taking charge one really can change their situations. This is not about blame or guilt it is about finding the ability to respond, and to not just blame the lost job or the recession or the politicians. By cutting spending habits and trimming the monthly expenses, one can begin to gain stability and confidence in their situations and in their lives.
