Kids and Substance Abuse

When it comes to kids and drugs the best prevention is early intervention.  While it is important keep things on a level that they can understand, it is never too early to start talking to your kids about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.  The earlier you start talking to them about the risks involved in using drugs, the less likely they will be to try it.  Maintaining an open line of communication is an essential part of keeping your kids off drugs.

Kids try drugs for various reasons: fitting in, peer- pressure, curiosity, boredom, stress. Early adolescence is a very tumultuous time for kids.  Being aware of what is going on in their lives, what they’re thinking, what they’re feeling could make the difference in whether or not they even consider trying drugs. Understanding and then explaining to your child the long term effects of addiction is key in the battle against substance abuse.  Not only do drugs do damage to your body, like kill brain cells and damage your lungs and kidneys, drugs also impair your ability to make good choices which can put you into even more dangerous situations.  And once addicted the addiction treatment process is long and slow, often requiring attendance at an addiction treatment center.

There are many resources and programs that are now available to help parents and kids maintain a drug and alcohol free life.   The D.A.R.E program is one such program that goes into elementary schools and helps to educate kids in a fun way about the risks of drug and alcohol use.  However, education must begin in the home.  Parents are still the number one anti-drug.  Let’s stop this cycle of abuse before one more child gets sucked into the world of drugs and one more parent has to stage an alcohol drug intervention to save them.
