Making new old friends in Palma
October 5th, 2009 by Caroline
My 3rd day in Palma de Mallorca and I’m enjoying being back on the island, back in my room at the luxury hotel Palma. David and his girlfriend Ann picked me up at the airport Sunday afternoon. I’ve been living it up ever since. Monday, I worked out at the athletics club where David work, and I’m still a little bit sore from over doing it, but I want to make sure I look good in my bathing suit. I hung out with his friends, Noel and Nick. We had dinner at their flat and then went to this fantastic bar.
The next morning, which was Nick’s birthday, I met up with his mom and her boyfriend from France. We went snorkeling at Cala Conill. Wow, indescribably amazing, beautiful. I had forgotten just how constant the clicking noise of the fish cracking shells sounded and just how clear the water is. I saw so many fish and what was even better, I got to use an aqua scooter. It’s one of those torpedo things with a propeller attached and it pulls you around under the water, really cool.
Afterwards, I hung out at the pool while David taught swimming to a bunch of local kids. We came back for dinner and met up with some of his other buddies. We all went out to a local bar and began to speak in Spanish, then Mallorquin and I felt like I was in the most challenging oral exam, but it was great, because I love the language and I’ve been learning Mallorquin myself. I’m just not that proficient at it yet.
Today, I have a very busy day planned out. I’m planning on chillaxing with David’s buddies at the public pool here in Santa Maria, that’s where David lives. Then tonight, I’m going to meet up with some new friends I met while snorkeling, Joe and Juan, for dinner in Palma. Tomorrow, I’ll have lunch with another Juan, an old professor of mine and the director of the Vanderbilt program here and we’ll have dinner over at his home where he’ll be cooking my favorite dish, broiled halibut with shallots, shrimp, peppers in a white wine sauce. Yum!
I’m really enjoying my stay so far in Palma. It’s been really fun to be with old friends and making new old friends.
