Taking a Tour Through Algarve

Posted by Greg on December 21st, 2009 and filed under Travel | No Comments »

Algarve is a city located in the south of the country of Portugal.  This has long been touted as the sunniest place in Europe, with beaches and great weather combined with heritage and history.  So many people just get into their cars and drive these days, but one of the best ways to experience this town is by simply walking through it.  Walking to the small town of Albufiera is well worth it, through narrow cobble-stoned streets you will pass markets and churches, and the ever so charming town square.  It is a fishing town that still embodies the old world charm.

Just outside of your Algarve hotel is a world that is begging to be explored.  If you head out of town, just a bit to the west your will run into a different town full of caves and clear skies, this is the small settlement of Ponta da Piedade. It is a photogenic spot, that would lend itself to mass produced postcards, but the masses do not have the time to find this gem of a beach town.  Which is just fine, as the restaurants and the small family owned pubs invite you in, with a welcome that the masses do not notice, or do not understand.

These cities along the Pacific coast offer a respite from the modern world, a brief time away.  Just simply walking through the cork factory in Faro and Sao Bras de Alportel, will give you a different perspective on other ways of life.  Ways of life that are so much more calm than the modern, business driven climate.  Here, they just harvest cork from oak trees.  They harvest, then they celebrate the harvest.  They take the time to appreciate life.  And taking a tour through Algarve will set you at ease.  There are many scenic routes through the region, and you find beauty and a bit of peace along the way.
