Boston Takes to Cycling

September 29th, 2010 by Caroline

Boston is known as a city of history and education. One of the original 13 colonies, the greater Boston area is home to dozens of universities and colleges as well as countless historic buildings and sites. Most people use the city’s public transportation or walk from place to place, even visitors in Boston boutique hotels have been known to eschew cabs or rental cars to explore the city by foot.

The city has committed itself to becoming more cycle-friendly and the recent Hub on Wheels is a sign the campaign is making tremendous progress. A celebration of cycling, the event drew an estimated 4,700 cyclists as well as supporters and bike enthusiasts. Riding events included pro Criterium races, both mens and womens, as well as 10, 30, and 50 mile rides for amateur bikers. An associated bike expo showcased local bike shops as well as family activites, music, food, and souvenirs. There was a race for kids ages 3-9 and the event included the 2nd Annual Mascot Race

Cyclists who participated in the longer runs were treated to a course that traveled through many of the city’s beautiful and historic neighborhoods and sites such as City Hall Plaza , the Arnold Arboretum, Franklin Park and Stony Brook Reservation. the mens pro race was won by Daniel Holloway of Bissell Pro Cycling, who is the US National Criterium champion. Lauren Tamayo (Peanut butter & Company) won the women’ event in a close sprint.

The 2010 Hub on Wheels was the 3rd annual event held at City Hall Plaza in downtown Boston.

The Most Important Thing You Can Do Before Graduating College

September 20th, 2010 by Caroline

For many of us, graduating from college is part of the American dream. We spend four years of high school studying hard so that we can get in to the college of choice , countless hours researching and applying to our favorite schools, and then several more years working hard for that coveted degree. Unfortunately, these days it takes more than just good grades and degree to land a good job. Employers are looking for more than just brains; they want experience.
While most students have jobs they are often in retail, fast food, or various jobs on campus. For the most part these jobs don’t provide the kind of experience that most employers are looking for. Any corporate blog can tell you that employers are looking for strong leadership skills, self-motivation, dependability and responsibility, as well as knowledge of the field.
The best way to obtain these skills is through an internship . There are companies out there that offer paid internship positions in a variety of fields. They provide the training, the opportunity observe professionals in action, and the ability to try out new skills. An internship at Southwestern Company , for example, gives students the opportunity to be entrepreneurs of their own direct sales business.
Landing your dream job is no longer just about what is on your resume. To be competitive you have to have the experience to back it up. An internship is the best way to get experience and maybe even some contacts that can help you reach your dream.

Las Vegas Went Anime

September 13th, 2010 by Caroline

When most people think of Las Vegas today, they think slot machines, poker tables, showgirls and great Las Vegas hotels brimming with all walks of life. But, over Labor Day weekend, Vegas came to be known for something unusual: Anime Vegas 7.

The Anime Vegas 7 convention was a great success. Even though it was a smaller Con than the better established Anime Con’s such as the one in San Diego and Los Angeles, this Anime Convention made up for their smallness in other ways. During the 3-day extravaganza, one could see an array of cosplayers (costumed Anime players) braving the 105 degree weather and showing up in their best Anime outfits and costumes. Most Anime Con attendees wore costumes, so much so that if you weren’t wearing a costume, you’d be the odd-one-out.

The Anime Con has an attendance of mostly younger people, late teen to early twenties, but there was a wide range of ages represented. The crowd, even though being mostly young, was very friendly, mellow and all had a great camaraderie with everyone else. Next time you’re in Vegas during one of the Anime Conventions, drop on by, the vibe is warm, supportive and there’s no attitudes being dished out. People were there to have fun and participate in panel discussion, concerts and their mutual love for Japanese animation.

Parents don’t need to worry if their children would like to participate, Anime is all about code-of-conduct, plus children could do a lot worse things in Vegas, so letting them participate all encourages social interaction, which is becoming almost a thing of the past.

Pontiac Sunfire and Repairs

September 1st, 2010 by Caroline

What do owners do if their car has been discontinued? One thing owners can do is to keep the repair manuals handy, because as the car continues to age, parts will fail, and it may be important to be able to review the types of parts needed in advance.

Take, for instance, the Pontiac Sunfire. Fifteen years ago, in 1995, the Sunfire replaced the Sunbird as Pontiac’s compact car. The Sunfire could be purchased in a variety of forms — a sedan, a coupe, or a convertible. These cars were constructed in Lordstown, Ohio (up until 2004) and in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico . The convertible models were constructed in Lansing, Michigan . Sunfire production ended, though, on June 22 in 2005.

Priced at 11,500 U.S. dollars, the Sunfire sold over 36,000 vehicles in the U.S., while 33,724 cars were sold in Canada in 2004. With over 69,000 Sunfire owners on the road, and with the discontinuation of the model, it’s become more important for these owners to check out a Pontiac Sunfire Repair Manual .

As 2010 closes, even more Pontiac vehicles will be retired as GM intends to phase out the brand by the close of the year, choosing to emphasize four other core brands in North America: Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC. With discontinued vehicles, parts for repairs will become even harder to find, although a look at the Pontiac repair manual should help these owners find the required part.
