Ways to Improve your Golf Game

November 30th, 2011 by Caroline

Golf can be a game that is both frustrating and rewarding. Regular players will know that  those two emotions can often occur in the same round. Regardless of their level of natural talent though, golfers can take a few simple steps to improve their golf game. Even after a few hours of tuition and practice, they will notice a significant difference. Great scores start with the swing. Players who regularly find themselves wandering through dense woods in search of errant balls are obviously getting something wrong on the tee. A club pro can usually analyze where the fault lies after watching a player hitting drives for ten minutes or so. A few hints on grip, stance, approach and follow-through won’t make a player a world-beater, but should keep them closer to the fairways.

Video analysis can be a useful way of allowing a player to diagnose their own faults. Players are often surprised to watch their own action, whether it’s driving or putting. Fellow players and the club pro can also weigh in with some valuable insights.

Players keen to make real improvements might want to consider a course of lessons. Local golf clubs usually offer learning sessions for beginners and intermediaries. It is often possible to tailor a course of lessons to concentrate on a particular aspect of golf, like putting or the short game.

Players who prefer to watch and learn might offer to caddy for one of the best players at their club. Watching a decent player choose their clubs, and studying the way they approach the ball and line up putts can be a revelation. In a way it’s a free lesson, and a chance to find out how other players deal with golf’s challenges.

It’s tempting for many inconsistent players to blame their clubs, but just occasionally they can be the problem. Size is an important issue, so it’s best to get expert advice at a club shop before investing. Feel is a less-tangible consideration, but can be crucial. If that putter doesn’t feel like an extension of a player’s grip, their shots aren’t going to drop. Trial and error, perhaps by borrowing friends’ clubs, is the only way to discover which clubs feel most comfortable.

Nowadays it’s easy to find a golf program that works best for you. Just remember, be patient! There will be good days and bad days, even the best of the best struggle on the course sometimes.  Maybe that is why people can be so obsessed with their golf game.  What do you think?
