The Glorious Cheese and Seafood of Menorca

The Balearic Islands just off the coast of mainland Spain, provide peaceful get-aways for tourists seeking rest, relaxation, moments on the beach, or food and fiestas.  There are many fine hotels and beach side resorts, so when booking your stay on the island of Menorca, check this out, a website that will provide you with all of the information you need to make your decision an informed one.  I found my perfect lodging, and headed off to discover the tastes of the island, which were much more varied than I had expected.

Throughout all of Spain, and each of the islands, seafood is a staple, and on the island of Menorca it is fresh and prepared with spices and sauces that will tantalize your senses, all five of the them.  I, myself, could live on a diet of seafood, and here I was simply in heaven, from mussels in spicy tomato based sauces, to grilled squid and prawns.  But my big surprise was to find out that the island specialty is a dish called calderata de llagosta , which is simply stew made with lobster.  Lobster?  Delicious!  This began as a meal made by fisherman when they were out to sea, it is the Menorcan version of comfort food.  And I must say, that as I was half way through my first experience with a bowl of lobster stew, I was feeling pretty comfortable.

Cheese, another one of my favorite experiences I discovered while traveling through the American cheese capital state of Wisconsin.  The cheese of Menorca was given an honor, just as the Michoacán cheese of Mexico, Cotija is known to be a regional cheese, so too is the Mahon cheese of this Balearic Island, gaining that distinction of Denomination of Origin in 1985.  And what better to enhance the flavor of such foods as the Menorca gin. The gin produced on the island is different from gins produced in other countries, there is no need for a mixer of tonic when sipping the herb based spirit.  In all, there are many experiences to be had on the island, and for those seeking a bit of the traditional culinary delights, well let’s just say…they won’t be disappointed.

Eating; The National Pastime, Delifrance, MacDonalds, Wifi

Eating is the national pastime in Singapore and has acquired the status of a refined art. The island is a tropical paradise for epicureans of every cuisine and budget. While countries in the region brag about their national dishes, none offers such a delectably wide variety as Singapore. Singapore fish head curry may qualify as the national dish, but it’s hard to say. With 10 types of Chinese cuisines, Indian, Malaysian, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, Korean, French, Italian and other European, Russian, Mexican , Polynesian and Scottish foods, selecting a “national” dish is nearly impossible !

There’s a very respectable selection of Western food at the top end of the market, a few good places in the middle bracket and swelling ranks of cheaper fast food restaurants like Kentucky Fried Chicken, MacDonalds and a proliferation of pizza restaurants. For young trendy Singaporeans, coffee culture is all the rage. This digital generation, completely addicted to hand held electronic devices, likes to hang out in the sophisticated cafes to drink their coffee. (must have wifi ). Favorite spots are The Coffee Bean, Starbucks and Spinelli’s, all who provide a nice range of fresh coffee, both beans & ground. Delifrance, known for freshly baked croissants, bread and other pastries has expanded and now has restaurants and cafes all over the city.

Don’t be put off by characterless brightly lit restaurants in Singapore; the food can be excellent. Eating spots range from high rise revolving restaurants to a neon lit sidewalk seafood stand. A delicious dinner can cost as little as $3, or more than $100 and the two may be just yards away from each other. For example it’s possible to have a small beer in the bar at one of the Singapore luxury hotels for $8 or more and then across the road indulge in a huge plate of curry and rice for $3. It’s hard to say what role the design of the restaurant and its physical location have to do with the quality and price of food.

The Foods of Mallorca

Posted by Greg on January 10th, 2009 and filed under Food & Drink, Travel | No Comments »

Mallorca is commonly known in the West as Majorca. This popular Spanish island is known for its wonderful beaches and amazing weather. Visitors will find plenty of ways to relax and enjoy a visit to Mallorca, whether reclining on the sand, visiting traditional villages in the island’s interior, or dancing the night away in a trendy club. And take time to enjoy the incredible food offered throughout the island. The island is home to over 2400 individual restaurants featuring local cuisine as well as foods from around the world.

The island is known for combining savoury and sweet ingredients in their fish and meat dishes. Pork and vegetables are the primary ingredients, though there are many seafood offerings as well. Sobrassada is a favorite ingredient. This spicy pork sausage is made locally and can be found in a variety of dishes or simply served alone on a piece of bread. Other favorite pork dishes include aufegat, blanquet, libritos, and rostit.

As this is Spain, you’ll find lots of paella, especially seafood varieties, on Mallorca. However, soup is arguably the most popular dish on the island. Featuring meat or fish, soups range from broths to thick stews. Mallorca is known for thick, dry soups with vegetables and cabbage as well as the main protein. These local specialities also contain slices of bread soaked in paprika, garlic, broth, and tomatoes.

Breakfast on the island usually includes the famous ensaimada or try eggs fried over sobrasada and covered in a sauce of vegetables and milk. Almonds are one of the island’s largest crops and can be found in a variety of foods, especially desserts. Gato is an almond cake usually served with almond ice cream. Other desserts to try include Garrometes del Papa, Turron and Geixonera de Brossat.

In addition to sun and food, Mallorca offers great shopping and plenty of outdoors activities such as hiking, sailing, and cycling. With the ever-growing influx of tourists, hotels range from 5 star hotels Mallorca to trendy resorts and smaller inns.

New York Foods

Posted by Greg on December 20th, 2008 and filed under Food & Drink, Travel | No Comments »

New York is a microcosm of the United States, a vibrant, multicultural city of immigrants, arts, music, business, politics, shopping, historical landmarks, and, perhaps most importantly, food. As the top US tourist destination, the city draws millions of visitors every year. No matter the reason for the visit, business, entertainment, history, culture, etc., every visitor leaves with an appreciation for the great diversity reflected in the city’s food. New York restaurants offer cuisines from practically every corner of the world as well as a number of dishes that are synonymous with the city itself.

Street vendors everywhere offer the famous New York Hot Dog. Some locals refer to them affectionately as “dirty water dogs.” Pushcarts can be found in the parks and the sidewalks throughout the city. Perhaps the most famous hot dog in the world can be found at Natan’s on Coney Island.

The bagel and the deli sandwich are also New York staples. Both originated with Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Bagles are also available anywhere in the city, but the best bagels are hidden away from the normal tourist spots. A number of famous delis offer pastrami and corned beef sandwiches as well as other deli offerings that have come to epitomize New York.

New York pizza is known for its thin crust and thick cheese. While the crust may be either chewy or crisp, the variety of toppings available can be mindboggling. Most pizzerias and vendors sell it by the slice, with pepperoni being the most popular topping for New Yorkers on the go.
