One of the most addictive drugs our country has to deals with today is methamphetamine (meth). Not only does it present risks to the user and those close to them, but also the community. The risk, however, is not only restricted to fires from cooking this highly addictive drug. There are just as many, if not more dangers to those who use. Once the user has injected, snorted, smoked, or ingested the meth they receive a “rush” that is increasing the amount of dopamine their brain receives. The result is extreme wakefulness, physical activity, and a decrease in appetite. It can also cause an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, and hyperthermia. After prolonged use, symptoms of paranoia and hallucinations begin to appear. Even after the user has stopped, there are health problems that will remain for the rest of their lives. These include loss of memory, impaired verbal learning, and change in emotional function.

While it is important keep things on a level that they can understand, it is never too early to start talking to your kids about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The earlier you start talking to them about the risks involved in using drugs, the less likely they will be to try it. Maintaining an open line of communication is an essential part of keeping your kids off drugs.

Kids try drugs for various reasons: fitting in, peer- pressure, curiosity, boredom, stress. Early adolescence is a very tumultuous time for kids. Being aware of what is going on in their lives, what they’re thinking, what they’re feeling could make the difference in whether or not they even consider trying drugs. Understanding and then explaining to your child the long term effects of addiction is key in the battle against substance abuse. Hydroxycut gets recalled

Hydroxycut has recalled 14 of their products after they were linked to cases of serious liver damage and the death of a 19-year-old boy. The Food and Drug Administration warns dieters and body builders to stop using Hydroxycut immediately as they have received 23 reports of serious liver problems in consumers.

Hydroxycut has not commented on the recall. It is still undetermined which ingredient in the dietary supplement may cause liver damage.

The amount of people abusing over the counter drugs including diet pills are increasing. Dr. Phil recently said on his website about diet pills, “If you are addicted to diet pills, you are addicted to drugs. Diet pills are drugs. Some of them are over the counter and that doesn’t mean they’re less potent; that just means they are less controlled. They can be just as dangerous as what you get by prescription. If you have someone that is living between diet pills, just one pill to the next in order to lose weight or keep their weight down, that is a dangerous addiction. The fact that it may come from a doctor or over the counter at the store doesn’t change its physical and psychological threat to your well-being.

Diet pills do not work. They do not keep you under control long term. And they can be addictive and are very, very dangerous. This young woman that we’ve had on the show is so addicted to the diet pills that her ability to even sit still is compromised. Can Addiction Be Overcome By Reading a Book

There have been many books written about how to overcome addiction. Many individuals have become pseudo celebrities based on the books or programs they’ve developed which tell people how to successfully overcome their addictions and go on to achieve successful lives. It is difficult to believe that people can fully rehabilitate themselves simply by reading about how to do it. Many of these destructive behaviors that are displayed by those with addiction problems can’t be unlearned overnight and need many months; if not years of constant work to claim that they’ve been overcome.

Whether an addict attempts to overcome their addiction issues through a book, movie, or traditional drug rehabilitation program, it will not be successful unless that person is really ready and willing to change their lives. This usually begins with them admitting they have a problem in the first place, and then taking the necessary actions and steps to deal with the issue. If the person is not willing to accept that there is an issue to begin with, they are not going to be willing to invest the time or effort that is required to see a full recovery, and when they do leave treatment the likelihood of relapse is very strong.
